Untitled Montage Thought

This is the very beginning of a new montage. Unlike my previous montages, I came up with the end first. In the past I just cut some footage together and found a memoir to match. This time I have something very specific in mind. I return to The Breakfast Club as my subject. I'm choosing to focus on the two female characters Claire and Allison. Like the film suggests, we are each of these characters in one way or another.

Untitled California Thought

“California is a fine place to live - if you happen to be an orange.”

I used to love California (Hollywood specifically). Even before I ever visited, it was always the place my mind wandered off to. I was eighteen when I first saw this place with my own eyes. At the time, it was everything I imagined and more. I loved the fact that the whole time I felt like I was in a movie. I loved that every morning at breakfast there would be at least one person reading a script. It seemed like the perfect place to me.

Four years later I returned to discover a different feeling. The Hollywood Sign isn't too great the second time around. Tacky. The whole place is a damn novelty. Perhaps it was the fact that I had an eighteen year build up to that first trip and I went back too quickly. But even still, should it matter how recent my previous trip was?

California, here I go.

Untitled Poster Thought

While I was on IMDB this afternoon, I came across a website with minimalist movie posters. Basically they are unique posters of our favorite movies using one visual representation. I keep seeing these things and so I decided to take a stab at it. This is my version of Back To The Future: Part II.

When I was a kid, all I wanted was a hoverboard. I would watch this movie over and over again thinking that in the year 2000, we would have this technology. Well, its 2010 and I'm still waiting. Technically they still have until 2015 before all hope is lost.

Here's hoping...

Untitled Photo Thought

I've been spending a lot of time at my computer the last couple of days and this is my recent result of that. I have no idea what it is or what it's for but I still think it's neat. I'm not sure if it's done though. I really want to put some more text but I have no idea what to say.

The picture was originally taken when I was at the Museum of Modern Art. It was a series of lights that resembled the Empire State Building. So I took it and put in my usual colors of red and black. And while stripes didn't work, I still made sure there were lines in it. I like how it looks like the fence you would see at the top of the building. I thought about integrating those viewfinders you usually see but that hasn't worked out yet.

I think I'm just going to leave it alone for a bit and come back to it.

Untitled Movie Thought

One downfall to the coming of age film is the fact that they are commonly monogamous with teenagers. I always loved the term “coming of age” because it wasn’t age specific, which implied its persistence beyond adolescence. But despite some mediocre attempts in the eighties, this idea had never been given the respect it deserved.

In the mid nineties, we were given just that in the form of four twenty-something friends, fresh out of college and each with a personal expedition. This film broke the adolescence barrier and took us on a realistic quest to getting a job, paying the rent, and finding our independence.

Reality Bites is a film that I grew up with in every sense of the cliche. Being a staple of my teen years, it displayed the dream of living like an adult without sacrificing any youthful behavior. We too could spend our Saturday nights tripping out because we discovered that Evian is naive spelled backwards.

Being a staple of my twenties, it converesly revealed the painful truth about being stuck between where you are and where you want to go. No longer worried about final exams, the characters must find their ultimate purpose in the world by taking a blind step in an unknown direction.

From this basic opposition, the actors skillfully fleshed out the structure with characters we knew and believed in. They created the perfect amount of comedy and tradgey to allow a wide audience to rediscover its authenticity.

Summed up: “I loved it until I lived it”.

Untitled Resume Thought

I've recently decided to change the look of my resume. It seems you only get one shot to make an impression with potential employers and I don't believe my personality comes through on a basic resume. Being in a creative field, words on a page are duller than dirt so I jazzed it up a bit. Hopefully this will get people's attention.

I really love this photo. I love the amount of space inside the fame even in the original which had an equal amount on the opposite side. I love the classic shape of the tree. Just very simple in it's surroundings.

Initially a much larger picture, I cropped it and saturated the colors. I also put a sepia filter on it and added in the clouds. With all that space in the frame, it seemed a real shame having nothing in it (other than the circling vultures). I like that they add texture to the space without cluttering it. I wanted to add some text to it, as I am in love with words but after several tries it just seemed to look better plain. Perhaps the picture will speak for itself.

Untitled Montage Thought

For the last few months, I've been cutting montages from existing movies and giving them a six word memoir to match. This weekend, I finished my fourth in the series and I'm quite happy with it. It's definitely the darkest and most challenging montage I've cut so far.

This time around I used the movie Donnie Darko as my subject. I really like the amount of blue used in this movie. There were so many shades to play with.

I entitled it "Please Stand By".
