First ever painting!

I'm very excited about this because I've taken my creativity into a new medium. I've never painted before in my life. Aside from the stuff you do in grade school school art class, I've never touched a brush to canvas. However I've always wanted to. It was something that always roamed in the back of my mind but was scared to try.

Something snapped this weekend that caused me to go out and buy paint, brushes, and a canvas. And after a couple days of playing and experimenting, this is the result.

I know it's not very good. It doesn't emotionally connect to me aside from the fact that I wanted a lot of blue. I have no idea why it's just a moon and what started out as stars but look more like snow. As a beginner to the world of painting, I decided to do something very simple.

I might not like the final result but I'm proud of myself for doing it.

Woody Allen

"NYC"

The other night before falling asleep, I wrote down this idea about the KFC logo. I originally saw it with an image of the Statue of Liberty. Within the first ten minutes of doing this, I was smart enough to ask myself "Why does it have to be the Statue of Liberty?". There are so many images that represent New York that it made perfect sense to explore them. It was soon after this moment that it turned into a picture of Woody Allen.

I think it works quite well.

PS- I'm currently watching "Midnight in Paris" for the sixth time.

A Childhood Fear

"Clowns"

Clown: Ever been to the Circus?
Kramer: When I was a kid...
Clown: Did you like it?
Kramer: Well it was fun... kinda scared of the clowns.
Clown: Are you still scared of clowns?
Kramer: Yeah...

This is a fear I share with a lot of people. My fear steams from two different childhood incidents. The most prominent was when I saw Jack Nicholson's portrayal of the joker in 1989's Batman. I don't know what it is but it was a big deal. The second was Jelly Bean the clown. She appeared at my birthday party (age unclear) and I was terrified. I spent the whole party hiding from that damn clown.

Candy: An Hour Later

"Booze of Childhood"

It's done! The end.

Candy

"Booze of Childhood"

This is a very simple image. I'm not sure if I'm going to add another layer to it or not. I'm still playing. I feel like I'm close but not yet there. We shall see.

Movie Ticket

"ADMIT NONE"

This was done in one night after searching the website of Bed Bath and Beyond. My mother wants a series of images for the basement that match the "Burnt Popcorn" image. She wanted images that were borderline novelty. Bed Bath and Beyond, among other home decor shops, always have some version of this ticket stub in the art section. When I came upon it on the site, the idea to put in the "N" was almost instant.

This is definitely something I would put in my home but I'm pretty sure my mom won't be too receptive to it. However it was an idea that had to be done.

Ketchup and Mustard

After my extreme happiness with the Peanut Butter and Jelly, I got the idea to create a series of kitchen photos with famous duos. When I thought about it, there are so many items that go together like salt and pepper, cheese and crackers, mac and cheese, etc.

Above is ketchup and mustard. I actually drew the squares and letters with the condiments themselves. I don't feel the same joy with it as I did with the Peanut Butter and Jelly so I'm just going to say this is my first attempt. When I get it right, I'll know.

New iPhone App

Last night I downloaded a new app for my phone called "Pic Stitch" which is a seemingly lame way to put several different photos into one frame. However, this ended up working to my advantage with these two photos.

I originally had each of these photos framed for my first art exhibition this weekend but I soon realized that unless these images were framed together, they didn't stand well on their own.

This is the perfect way (I think) to put them together. I'm very happy about the re-birth of these images.

Untitled Heart: Part II

A week ago, I posted this picture of a cardboard heart but I left it without a name. This might be the longest I've ever gone before giving something a title. Trying to incorporate the word "heart" into it, everything seemed wrong and obvious. I didn't want the name to just be about the heart. There are other elements that I love about this photo that I wanted to include in the name. Then finally, it came to me: "Cross My Heart".

Queen West Art Crawl

"Black Bird"

With only a week left until the art show, I am using any and all free time to get myself organized. Since this is not one of my greatest skills, the process is a bit scattered.

This is one of three black and white photos that will be in my booth. And because the quantity is lower then the other walls, I've decided to place each photo in three sizes from biggest to smallest.

This creates a neat effect and really increases the appeal of the photo. I originally came up with this idea to create an overall symmetry but it actually looks really neat (at least it does on the floor of my apartment).

Untitled Heart

I noticed this cardboard cutout in the shape of a heart while I was at work today. I decided to tape it onto a foggy piece of glass where I noticed a cross behind it. This image was very intriguing to me yet I cannot come up with a name for it. It will remain untitled for now.

Fluorescent Light

"Golden Arches"

I took this photo yesterday while I was in a Tim Hortons. While waiting for the bathroom, I looked up to see these fluorescent light. I originally found it interesting because of the shape of the bulbs. It was only after the fact that the McDonald's famous arch popped out at me.

I really like this one. It's been a while since I got a good light shot and I'm quite happy to put this one next to the others.

Movie Review Phrases

This might just be lame and stupid but I had the urge to do it any way. I've divided my exhibition into three categories: Black and White, Photoshop, and iPhone photos. I wanted to write brief little blurbs about each of them but while doing so I felt like I was saying too much. I thought I'd cut it down to a sentence. Then came the idea to treat it like movie reviews. I don't know how I feel about it. I just know I had to do it.

This image was created very quickly. Playing around with an abandoned project, I produced this. I like it.

A Burnt Bulb

This is something I have been working on for the last few weeks. It got to this point pretty quickly but since then, no development. I keep opening it up hoping to have the answer as to how to fix it but I still have no idea what to do. As always I have no idea what it is or what it wants to be. All I know is that I'm beyond frustrated with it.

Bloodshot

I always intended for this image to be red. In the process, the red wasn't working which was why I switched to green. But I kept thinking about red. So I'm just testing this out. I don't know which one I'll end up printing for the show... perhaps one...perhaps both.

Bird On A Wire

This might be the quickest I ever produced a piece. I started this afternoon and finished an hour ago. Again, I'm unsure of its completion but time will tell that. My approach to this was somewhat different than previous ones because I thought of the name first and created the image around it. I don't think I've ever done that before. Perhaps that's why I was able to create it so fast.

Emerald Eye

I originally took the photo that evolved into this a week ago. I'm not sure if it's done which is why I'm going to step back for a while. I liked it until I compared it to my first "eye spy" creation. Why did I do that?
